Education is a model based on scarcity, compliance, and accreditation. It trades time, attention, and money for a piece of paper that promises value.
But we learn in ways that have little to do with the way public education is structured.
If you know how to walk, write, read, type, chat, operate or cook an egg, it may be because you have practiced and discovered and experienced, not because it was in a test. .
We run the risk of repeating educational methods that fail in an online environment and today I’m going to launch a series of lectures about difference – and how to make learning successful online. Open to everyone so they can learn is an extraordinary opportunity, one that focuses on ability, not compliance. Nobody I know has clearly described the elements of this new revolution, so I decided to share what I know.
Since inception and altMBA Akimbo workshop over five years ago (it is now an independent B company) I discovered the implications of building new approaches to online learning that works, scale and efficiency. Conferences have had a significant impact on more than 20,000 people in 75 countries.
I’ve heard from best-selling authors, founders and high school teachers, all wondering about best practices for this new moment in learning.
The results that the students achieved in the seminars were completely out of the table. Better completion rates, incredible amounts of engagement and growth, and most of all, life changed.
As the year 2021 comes, there is a huge increase in learning companies being founded and sponsored, independent teachers looking for new platforms as well as organizations that move gear with online learning. is being given priority. Google is rolling out certification courses, and schools are continuing to grapple with what it means to be distance students.
Alas, many of these efforts are unlikely to succeed with their stated goal of creating truly effective learning interventions. Some will be popular because they focus on entertainment instead of learning. And some will remain stuck in the old models of management and compliance.
Fortunately, some of these new efforts will truly facilitate learning for those who stick with them.
We’ve seen all of this before and my hope that those responsible for what is being built will learn from our experience. We are in the early stages of a worldwide transformation in how people learn.

The educational regimes of the last century have made us distracting. It turns out that clear and easy approaches are really not the ones we need to focus on. When we commit to the results, the path will be clearer.
